Elmer Franklin, former member of the Mighty Clouds of Joy passed today in Louisiana. Elmer Franklin's first session with Clouds dates back to 1960. He left the group somewhere in the seventies because of health problems.

So, this evening I put an old mighty Clouds of Joy LP on my record player:

Family Circle, Peacock PLP 114

We have a major overlap in tastes, MG. The Harmonizing Four is one of my favorite groups, and I have the same CD of the Southern Sons. I have a treasured album on cassette by the Fairfield Four that was never released on CD. I bought it, and a video of them when I heard them when they were actually four, many years ago.

The Harlem Gospel Choir.

It's a cd I picked up when we saw them at BB Kings in NY a couple of weeks ago (well, we saw half of them. The rest were at Yankee Stadium with the Pope). The editing is a little brutal but still some fine stuff.

Anmack, I enjoyed Vickie Winans' video, too!

What's the relationship of Vickie and the other members of the Winans' family. I don't know. Is she the daughter of Mom and Pop Winans? Or is she married to a family member? Who knows?

this song just kills me...was a hit on the community station in LA...when Karen Clark (Clark Sisters) recorded it with her daughter Kiki live...there is a You Tube with she and her daughter as well...it is just amazing as well ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winans_family

Didn't wan't to give any misinformation...they (Bebe and Cece) were so close to Whitney Houston...I used to think they were related...

Thanks, Patti. I am at a dial-up connection now. I will check out that Youtube clip the next time that I have a good connection.

I just listened to Candi Staton's House of Love album. She does just an incredible version of Precious Lord (Take My Hand) on that record. Precious Lord is one of the most recorded gospel songs, and Candi's version stands with the best of them, as far as I am concerned.

Patti, thank you very much for the link to the Winans' family. In my personal opinion, Vickie is much involved in traditional gospel music while the other Winans are more involved in contemporary gospel music.

I'm listening to disc 1 of the following 2 CD's set :

(IMG:http://www.fremeaux.com/components/com_virtuemart/shop_image/product/FA1305.jpg)

Yes, that's right, Frémeaux & Associés just issued volume 5 of their Complete Sister Rosetta Tharpe series, and so far (track 11 of disc 1) I'm having a ball !

What's great with the sister is you don't even have to be a believer to enjoy her music (which is true also for many great gospel artists, I know).
If you enjoy gospel MUSIC, or blues, as well as rhythm & blues, you'll love this new collection !
40 tracks spanning from 1953 to 1957, recorded with or without Marie Knight, and backed by the James Roots quartet, Leroy Kirkland Orchestra, the Sy Oliver singers & Sam Price trio, the Harmonizing Four & David Martin quartet, Ernest Hayes/Doc Bagby quintet, plus a few solo tracks, including one live at the Apollo.
The booklet (in both French and English) isn't as thick as the usual Frémeaux issues, but this is volume 5 and Jean Buzelin may already have printed just about everything he could have to say about Rosetta Tharpe in the 4 previous volumes, but he still finds something to write, at least about the era, 53-57, and the acompanying bands.

I know those Frémeaux and Associés albums aren't cheap, and I'm just one happy son of ... the blues that they keep sending me free copies for review, but if they didn't, the Complete Sister Rosetta Tharpe is one serie I would buy.

Edited : sorry guys, I made a mistake : no solo tracks here, it's the Sister playing with unknown backup bands.
