QUOTE (Bluejay @ September 25, 2009 07:01 pm)
Turns out he had financial interests in labels and publishing -- he apparently even got control of a host of copyrights for songs he aired.

I belive Dick Clark had a piece of Swan records (most famous for the Beatles' "She Loves You"). "Wild Weekend" by the Rockin' Rebels, a #1 on Bandstand, was on Swan. (I know this because the tune stared life as the theme song for DJ Tommy Shanon on WKBW in Buffalo.)

Sea-Lark Publishing was his, too. Some of the early Blues Project songs were published by them.

Oh... Sea-Lark = C Lark = Clark

WKBW - wow! That brings back memories. I grew up in Niagara Falls. WKBW was the big AM station. I usually listened to WUFO ( soul music station from Buffalo), WBLK ( soul music station from Toronto) and CHUM FM (the ultimate hippy station from Toronto). Radio was so big back then. Toronto was a very hip town, sort of a San Francisco of the east. CHUM FM was playing bands like Pink Floyd long before anyone in the States knew who they were. They had very mellow DJ's that would put on whole sides of LP's. There were 17 clubs with live music on "the strip" in Niagara Falls in the late '60's. Rock bands, R&B bands, Go-Go girls, the whole thing. One of my brothers married a go-go girl. Mistake! Anyway, those were the days......

WKBW was a 50,000 watt monster "back in the day".

George "Hound Dog" Lorenz was their firs big night-time Rock N' Roll guy. the next one I remember was Tommy Shannon. If you're familiar with "Wild Weekend", put these lyrics to it:

Top tunes, news and weather.
This is the spot where things get better
on the
Tom Shannon show!
(Tom-my Shannon Show
KB-Radio).

After Shannon it was Joey Reynolds at night...then my interest turned to WPHD, the university "hippy" station. (WPHD, waste Piled Higher and Deeper in Buffalo!)

Too Much Information!
