I'm a huge raunchy slide guitar blues fan (Johnny Winter, Joe Bonnamasa, Walter Trout etc.) and am always looking for new artists to listen to. There are probably hundreds of great bands out there that would be next to impossible to find unless you could see them locally or at a festival.
I would like to find any raunchy local slide guitarists that members here would recommend.
Ill start off with a great band out of Spokane Wa. called 'Too Slim and the Taildraggers'
I would also strongly reccomend Dave Hole from Australia.

These aren't necessarily one band, or unknown bands. Rather, they're some blues covers I stumbled across not too long ago. These songs have quickly become probably my favorite songs with modern slide guitar. They're amazing!

Preachin' Blues - Derek Trucks Band
John The Revelator - Gov't Mule
CatfishBlues - Gov't Mule
Death Letter - Derek Trucks Band
Soulshine - Gov't Mule
Dust My Broom - ZZ Top

Well, this guy is a personal friend of mine, but I highly recommend him.

Paul Mayasich is a killer slide player! He's really influenced by Ry Cooder and David Lindley with a heavy helping of Duane Allman too. Some of his music is greasy electric slide with a full band, some is acoustic resonator roots music. I think he's the best slide player in the state of Minnesota, but he always tells me he's not.

You can order CDs off his website.

I have stumbled across some great tracks in the same way. I have a 'Tribute to Hound Dog Taylor' CD that has a killer version of 'Send you back to Georgia' by Govt Mule and there are some other great tracks on it.
I found another compilation that has one of my all time favourite tracks: 'Life in the jungle' by John Mayall. Walter Trout played some blasting slide guitar on it.

John Primer
Tom Holland
Lil' Ed (his band is called "Lil' Ed and the Imperials"
Billy Flynn
Bob Margolin

those are 5 of the best of the Chicago Blues style

Derek Trucks is indeed a GREAT slide player... he doesn't always play Blues but he always plays some deeply soulful slide...

In three easy to say syllables - DUANE ALLMAN! One of the best slide players ever with a touch like no other.

I'd advise someone to start on slide with Muddy Waters...primality comes before sophistication. Then go to Elmore James...for more primality. Players may think it is simple...but then it is very hard to duplicate...therefore it must be very difficult.

Then you could move forward to Duane Allman...and early Johnny Winter....that would get you into something that works well with popular forms..you need to use a 2 fingered approach..or fingerpicks like Johnny to do it right. (the above picture shows Duane using thumb and finger)

As far as sophisticated approaches...there's a bunch of them...a lot of them lose the primality though...I'd advise staying away from that until you felt you had the primality down...

I guess we're both out of the running. Bix is looking for ""raunchy local slide guitarists." We both suggested artists who are no longer local - nor are they alive.

Check out Mike Henderson-he plays in "open" C which is lower and murkier than most and he's hard to beat-he works in Nashville mostly........

Alive or dead, local or not ... makes no differnece. I have hundreds of blues CDs Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter, Elmore, to name but a very few, mostly electric guitar blues and I am looking for new artists who I haven't heard before.

And don't dismiss the Country steel players.Speedy West is absolutely spectacular.Leon McAuliffe of 'Steel Guitar Rag' fame.I'm a huge fan of Buddy Emmons who plays Country,Jazz,Pop and even Classical Music.
